Modifying Yoga for People with Osteoporosis Free Webinar

  • Date: Wed, August 13, 2014
  • Time: 1:00 PM EDT
  • Duration: 1 hour

Here’s the meeting description:

“Learn from a physical therapist how to adapt traditional yoga postures to make them safe and effective for biomechanical alignment and bone health. Gain background by reviewing  a portion of the history, purpose and physical benefits of yoga along with lessons from research for selecting effective exercises for bone health.

Then, see how to adapt the Sun Salutation Series, standing poses and floor poses found in most yoga traditions for people with osteoporosis or osteopenia (low bone density). By practicing the ideal asanas and avoiding risky asanas, you can perform yoga positions that can prevent fractures, avoid injuries, decrease pain, and improve posture, strength, balance and bone density.”

“You will learn how to:

  •  select yoga poses and postures that are safe and effective for older adults with osteoporosis and osteopenia
  • avoid yoga poses and postures that are contraindicated or risky for older adults with excessive thoracic kyphosis (rounded upper back or Dowager’s hump),
  • immediately apply simple techniques and tips for optimal posture, and
  • implement simple fracture prevention tips into everyday life.”

Sherri’s Sun Salutation Series with Chair Modification is brilliant! See it on YouTube, as well as her Sun Salutation Series without the chair.

Make exercise work for you, no matter what!

I have found that there is always a way to make exercise work with my personal training clients and class participants, no matter what a person’s age, fitness level, or health concerns. Having heard Sherri speak at the National Osteoporosis Foundation’s International Symposiums on Osteoporosis, I feel confident that her upcoming  free webinar will be filled with research-based tips and advice on staying safe with your yoga practice.

Enjoy!

  1. Hi,
I’m researching yoga for osteoporosis, as a woman of 60 with, at last scan 3 years ago, osteoporosis in L3-4 & a yogini & yoga teacher.
I would love to have access to this lecture & wonder if there’s any way that can be made possible?

    Thank you so much
In addition this is an area I see myself soon specializing in. I’m most of the way through 500YTT.
    Namaste, norma
